When to trim hedges in Southern Ontario

Most hedges are trimmed in late spring to early summer after the first flush of growth, with a lighter touch-up later in summer if needed. Avoid heavy trimming in late fall, when new growth can be damaged by frost. Spring-flowering shrubs are best trimmed right after they bloom.

Shaping for healthy hedges

A hedge trimmed slightly narrower at the top than the bottom lets light reach the lower branches, which helps prevent bare, brown bases — a common issue with cedars.

Cleanup included

Clippings are raked out of beds and lawns and hauled away, so there's nothing left for you to deal with.

Common questions

How often should hedges be trimmed?

Once or twice a season for most hedges. Fast-growing hedges may need a second trim in mid to late summer.

Can you cut back a badly overgrown hedge?

Often, yes, though some species (especially cedars) don't regrow from bare wood. We'll look at it and tell you what's realistic.
